CHANGED: San Joaquin River Gorge

Saturday, Feb 2, 2019, 8:30 AM PST Add to calendar
Park and Ride 790 North Temperance Avenue Clovis, CA, 93611

The winter storm warning has changed my plan!

There is a $5 day use fee to park if you do not have an Interagency pass.

The loop is 8 miles and moderately strenuous to strenuous. There are two river hikes as well that would involve less elevation gain.

Rain is in the forecast, but I will bring a jacket and my umbrella. We will hike until we are done and retreat to the car.

I will save snowshoeing for another day.

Don't forget to help your carpool driver pay for fuel.

@Becca VW: Thanks! we'll see how it all works out on the 12th.

Lori this sounds really fun. At this time I cannot commit. I’m usually skiing if the snow is good. If my plans change I’ll change my RSVP

Lori, I'd love to go this upcoming Saturday! I've been in other hiking groups, but am new to this one. I don't have chains. Is it possible to carpool?
Jan 3, 2019, 9:57 PM
@Jessica Rutkosky: This coming Saturday the 5th I will be in avalanche training, but you are more than welcome to carpool with us from the ranger station listed above on the 12th.

@Lori: Whoops! Thank you Lori. I appreciate you letting me carpool. See you at the Ranger's Station on the 12th!

I'd like to carpool on the 12th.

I would really like to go on this outing. However, my sister is having surgery next Tuesday and I don't know yet if she will need help over the weekend of the 12th. I will know more after Wednesday. Hope that's not too late to sign up.

I am a "Maybe" now. I made a commitment at work (school) for a project on Sat. I will confirm on Wed.

It's looking like the forecast for next weekend is rain and snow, 40% chance. If that increases I may switch the venue to hiking either from Wellbarn Rd to the river, or San Joaquin River Gorge.

I have to cancel - I’m coming down with a cold. Ugh! Have fun!
Jan 9, 2019, 3:28 AM
Unfortunately I will need to cancel as well. Family obligations this weekend. I look for to being out there with you sometime soon. Have a great hike!
Jan 9, 2019, 5:21 AM
Lori, since it's only the 2 of us going, I just wanted to check and see if Saturday is still on. Thanks!
Jan 11, 2019, 2:26 AM
@Jessica Rutkosky: I tried to send a message but am unsure you received it. I am going to reschedule to Feb 2. I hope you can come!
Jan 11, 2019, 4:05 PM
@Lori: Thanks for the message! I didn’t receive your first one. I look forward to joining you on Feb. 2!
Jan 11, 2019, 6:37 PM
@Jessica Rutkosky: Excited about the San Joaquin River Gorge! Is there any amount of rain that will cancel the hike or is it a go regardless? Thanks!
Feb 1, 2019, 1:33 AM
@Jessica Rutkosky: I'm going some distance regardless. Whether it's the loop or the river trail.
Feb 2, 2019, 2:38 PM
Would like to carpool from ranger district, but if snow is deep, I will end up cancelling--too much of a workout.
Jan 26, 2019, 8:03 PM
@Onya: I don't know what you think is too deep, but the snow has not been powdery and dry but heavy and wet. Rain is in the forecast this week as well as a little more snow. The on and off rain is making the snow less ideal for ski or snowmobile travel as it gets very consolidated and crunchy.
Jan 27, 2019, 2:33 AM
A snow machine ran up to the viewpoint, and others are following the track. I doubt there will be much depth on the trail unless it dumps another foot, predicted accumulating snow this week is a couple inches at best.

I guess I’m going to have to cancel and am totally disappointed. I really want to snowshoe with the group. I’m having a skin cancer removed tomorrow (on the top of my head) and have been told no bending over or strenuous exercise for 3-5 days after the procedure. Since I will likely be bending over, at the minimum, I’d better heed the doctor’s warning and not end up with complications. Have fun. It’s raining today in Kingsburg. It’s likely snowing in the mountains. You can’t get much better than shoeshoeing in a couple inches of fresh snow. Have fun! I really hope I can join the group next time.

I’m back on! Just call me wishy-washy! Lori, I’ll get my hat from you Saturday.
Feb 1, 2019, 1:24 AM
Lori, I'll meet at trailhead around 9:15.
Feb 1, 2019, 7:54 PM
By the way, Wayne got home from the sno parks about an hour and a half later than I did. He said it was the worst slickest driving ever on the 168 and the snow was coming down fast and hard, and people were stuck without chains, the tow trucks were making bank, and it was a very slow driving day up there. So we had a much easier drive. :)
