Well that filled up fast!

@Christine: And it will dwindle in the weeks before the trip, if it conforms to the trend. Life is what happens when you make other plans.
Jun 2, 2019, 11:50 PM
Hi, I could be in interested but have a preliminary question - I haven’t researched the route but do you know if there are/most likely will be) any heavily flowing/deep stream crossings on this route? Not a deal breaker but want to be prepared Thanks!
Jun 3, 2019, 12:14 AM Edited Edited on Jun 3, 2019, 12:15 AM
The only significant creek crossing is Post Corral Creek, by August that will be a boulder hop.
Jun 3, 2019, 12:16 AM
Looks amazing thanks for posting
Jun 3, 2019, 2:02 AM
Since there is so much interest, I went ahead and reserved a permit. $5 per person.
Jun 5, 2019, 5:13 PM
FYI: while there is a lake on the route called Rae Lake, this is not anywhere near the Rae Lakes LOOP. This will be 98% less crowded.

I’m sorry to have to pull out from the backpack trip but I need to stay close to home during that time. My daughter’s due date was moved up to Sept 1 so I need to stay close. Hopefully I can join you for another trip in the future! Have fun!
Jul 28, 2019, 5:00 PM
Me too. Can’t swing 6 days. Really wish I could!!!!!
Jul 31, 2019, 4:00 PM
I was hoping to make this trip but meetings at work are mounting and filling up this week. Have fun!
Jul 31, 2019, 5:23 PM
I will likely drive up and camp at Courtright the night before. There are spots free to camp in, for someone who brings all their water. Anyone wanting to do that can carpool with me. I can also give you the location on the map. If you look at this googlemap: https://goo.gl/maps/8XUU22wESCxfrvSw5 you can see the straight stretch of road between the bend labeled Courtright Intrusive Contact zone and the trailhead - there are campsites on either side of the road along that stretch. I will be in one of them.
Aug 1, 2019, 6:36 PM Edited Edited on Aug 1, 2019, 6:45 PM
@Lori: I'd like to meet you there and camp, depending on the road--ie if my Honda Civic can handle the roads. Do you know if they are dirt or paved? Enjoying your packing posts too. Thanks, Rebecca
Aug 6, 2019, 7:21 PM
@Rebecca: The road is paved all the way to the trailhead. Been there many times with my Mazda, Low Clearance Clarence. Tho there are a couple spots where it's got chuck holes (when I find Chuck I'll give him a piece of my mind about that). I will post warnings when using trailheads on jeep roads.
Aug 6, 2019, 7:28 PM
As for carpooling - if you want a spot to park cars and carpool from, the ranger station in Prather works for that. From Prather it's a couple of hours of driving. Route: https://goo.gl/maps/3oQ1QbTFbyps5JAt5
Aug 1, 2019, 6:38 PM
I'm still planning on going! Super excited! Should probably start packing stuff next week so I'm organized & not stressed out the night before.
I'm still waiting for my supervisor to officially approve the time off BUT I'm optimistic that it won't be a problem! ?
Aug 1, 2019, 9:38 PM Edited Edited on Aug 9, 2019, 4:41 AM
I’d like to carpool if anyone is interested.
Aug 2, 2019, 2:07 AM
@Becca VW: let me know if you want to leave midday the day before. I intend to pick up the permit on the way.
Aug 3, 2019, 4:17 PM
@Lori: I can’t leave until after 5 the day before.
Aug 3, 2019, 4:33 PM
@Lori: I can't leave until after 5 either...
Unless I maybe have an emergency of some type... Hmm ??
Aug 9, 2019, 4:54 AM
@Becca VW: Becca, let's talk about car pooling! If neither one of us can meet Lori. ?
Aug 9, 2019, 4:55 AM
@Melissa D: you’re on! I’ll be back in town next week. We can plan then.
Aug 9, 2019, 12:39 PM
@Melissa D: hi! Does your phone number start with 310? Can we talk this evening?
Aug 13, 2019, 6:08 PM
@Becca VW: My departure time is getting pushed later and later, btw. So let me know if the two of you are interested in carpooling late on Monday.
Aug 13, 2019, 6:10 PM
@Lori: We’ll be touching base today or tomorrow. I could leave anytime after 5 on Monday. I’ll ket you know!
Aug 13, 2019, 7:29 PM
I would also be up for meeting up and carpooling in frenso area. I am coming from bay area but wouldn't mind meeting up in frenso to cut down on some of the driving.
Aug 14, 2019, 4:31 AM
@Wendy Bank: Will you be arriving Monday? It sounds like Monday evening is the preferred departure for the Fresno contingent. Rebecca said she will go up a couple days ahead to acclimate camping at Courtright.
Aug 14, 2019, 4:34 AM
@Lori: Yes - I was planning to drive over on monday, I could be in Fresno around 4.
Aug 14, 2019, 4:59 AM
@Wendy Bank: I'll send you my address and you can meet me at the house at 5:30.
Aug 14, 2019, 9:28 PM
@Lori: Ok - sounds good. Looking forward to another fun trip.
Aug 16, 2019, 12:29 AM
@Lori: Melissa and I will be leaving my place at 7am. Should be at the trailhead by 9am.
Aug 16, 2019, 1:08 PM
Hi Lori,
I signed up way back, but not going to be able to make it. However, I see that you paid for wilderness permits. If I'm not replaced, I'll gladly repay you for that. I'll keep an eye.
I've been wanting to meet you, but not this time. And thanks for getting this site together.
Christine
Aug 3, 2019, 4:58 PM
@Christine: Thanks for that. I appreciate it. Maybe we'll meet some weekend coming up - I intend to put out some 2-3 day trips in fall.
Aug 3, 2019, 9:29 PM
I will bring my 6 liter gravity filter to share. If anyone needs a bear canister I have a BV solo I can loan.
Aug 3, 2019, 9:30 PM
After playing with my Gear Grams list, this is what I am taking for the trip. https://www.geargrams.com/list?id=55733
Aug 6, 2019, 4:05 PM
The nice thing about Gear Grams - you can set it to grams or ounces or pounds, weigh out all your gear to put it in the master list, and then assign items to different lists, playing with choices and seeing how it affects the weight of the pack.
Aug 6, 2019, 6:22 PM
Thanks for the info on road condition--studying map!
Aug 6, 2019, 9:16 PM
Sorry, I am on an extended Asia backpacking trip and did not realize I was moved to the Going list. I have updated my RSVP now. Looks like a great trip, have fun!!
Aug 6, 2019, 10:23 PM
Anyone coming from the bay area interested in carpooling?
Aug 7, 2019, 4:36 AM
I'm bringing fishing gear. How many people will eat trout if I cook them? I ask because I can bring a small pan to cook them, or a larger and slightly heavier pan to cook more of them.
Aug 7, 2019, 4:19 PM
@Lori: Cool. I'd totally eat trout, and I'd be willing to trade something in return.
Aug 7, 2019, 5:38 PM
@Lori: YES PLEASE!!!! ?
Aug 9, 2019, 4:43 AM
@Lori: so lori, with the anticipation of trout, that's a few dinners I won't need to pack right? Should I leave out more than one nights meal? Bec it says we'll be at like 4 lakes ?
Aug 13, 2019, 5:01 PM
@Melissa D: Remember I only catch the ones that bite the hook...
Aug 13, 2019, 5:14 PM
@Lori: I would be up for some trout
Aug 14, 2019, 4:26 AM
@ Lori Hi Lori and ladies!
I sprained my left ankle this weekend while I was hiking with my local Sierra Club group and I am not sure if I am able to recover before next Tue, At such, I will sign off from “going” list for now, just in case if someone else needs a space to sign on. I will see how my ankle is doing in the next few days, if I am able to go and there is still a space available, then I will sign up again! Thanks! Jessie..
Aug 12, 2019, 3:58 AM
@Jessie Lee: That sucks! ☹
Aug 13, 2019, 5:01 PM
@Melissa D: I know and I am so bummed.. this looks like a super fun trip.. I have the torn ligament to my left ankle and won't be able to go hiking/backpacking for a while.. :-(
Just make sure don't talk and hike at the same time.. that's how I twisted my ankle..
I hope I can join you ladies later in the fall if there is another one scheduled..
Aug 13, 2019, 6:45 PM
I'm so excited!!! & scared!!! 5 nights!!! That's double my last trip & by far the scariest thing I've signed up for this year! I can't WAIT to see how this goes!!
Aug 13, 2019, 5:04 PM
I'll upload a PDF of the map I'm using for the area. I sent it to Office Depot and got a 5 page map, full color, for less than three bucks.
Aug 13, 2019, 5:19 PM
I attached a map to the event, you should see the pdf for download at the bottom of the description.
Aug 14, 2019, 3:52 AM
Me too, Melissa! I've been conditioning with a full pack and am pleasantly sore! Lori- I wonder if you can tell me any more about Courtright car camping. Do I need a reservation? I plan to come a couple of days earlier for retreat and to acclimate to the 6700 feet it is. I also wonder about parking while we are hiking, and if I need to store excess food away from my car because of bears. Is there a web site or ranger station to check with for these answers? Thanks for organizing- I'm really looking forward. -Rebecca
Aug 13, 2019, 5:26 PM
@Rebecca: You can't reserve campsites. There are two official campgrounds. Marmot Rock has walk in sites and Trapper Springs is where the RVs go. It may be very busy Saturday but if you are there early enough there might be space. The sites I am aiming for are pullouts along the road, no fees involved. They were very full last weekend when we were there for trail crew. No camping at the trailhead, but plenty of folks use the pullouts. If I get the one I want there will be a great view. I'm bringing a couple gallons of water, since there are no sources on that part of the road. There are bear lockers at the trailhead parking to use if you can find one that will close properly - some are bent by the snow load they suffer in winter. Bears don't break into cars here.
Aug 13, 2019, 5:33 PM
If you get there Saturday and all the campgrounds are full, it would be easy to drive back along the road and find a pullout - it's legal to camp anywhere in the pullouts along that road to Courtright, as long as you are not blocking a gate or on something marked no camping. Another free option would be park at Maxson trailhead and walk the OHV road to Voyager Rock - there are picnic tables and bear lockers for the OHV campers to use. I've walked a backpacking class in to that campground and used a site before.
Aug 13, 2019, 5:36 PM
Great info and very speedy at that! Thanks Lori! I would like to find a place at at least 6000 feet or so.
Aug 13, 2019, 5:38 PM
The lake is at 8, anything along the road will be the same or slightly higher.
Aug 13, 2019, 5:45 PM
For those about to pack a bear canister: repackage out of bulky foil envelopes into freezer bags. Don't use a Food Saver! Use food that does not come in brick shapes. Couscous, rice, etc flows freely and morphs into weird shaped spaces. Cheese sticks and bars get stuffed in between the bagged foods. No cans, boxes, etc. Food that takes crushing and comes back like a pro, over bananas and potato chips. Avoid bread. Think flatbread or tortillas. I re-use freezer bags over and over, rehydrate in a separate container instead of trashing the bag. And after you get all the food in, there needs to be room for the trash and hygiene items. Don't bother putting the first day's snacks and meals in. It doesn't have to go - you're carrying it and eating it, so it'll just be trash that goes in at bedtime.
Aug 14, 2019, 3:21 PM
I got a permit when the group was full, paid $60. It looks like we have five (have not heard from Jenna) coming.
Aug 16, 2019, 5:14 PM
ok I will have cash
Aug 16, 2019, 9:34 PM
Rebecca is already at Courtright, Wendy and I will go up Monday at 5:30 pm to the above mentioned campsites. Becca and Melissa are driving up Tuesday morning to meet us at the trailhead at 9 am. I will pick up the permit on the way up the hill. I have a long list of chores to do but will be home until I leave, can be reached texting 559 307 9689.
Aug 18, 2019, 2:48 PM
Looking forward to it!
Aug 18, 2019, 2:57 PM
Hey women- how is everyone? An excellent trip. Just FYI, in case you hike with others like me; I am really feeling it and probably should have stayed in shaver lake for the night. I was shaky and headachy going down to Clovis, then caffeinated myself for the drive home. Probably not a good move. Still very tired with a heavy head on Wednesday and looking up reverse altitude affects. I am resting lots-probably also just plain tired-looks like I lost five or six pounds. And on a smaller note, my camera apparently did not retain any pics I took after Upper Indian Lake, so any group contributions are appreciated--thanks to Lori for her uploads. Melissa, I just got so happy seeing the pic of you with the fish! That was cool. Have a great week and hope to see you all again on some outing. -Rebecca
Aug 27, 2019, 5:49 PM
@Rebecca: I think you must have had a very suppressed appetite and didn't eat enough. I recommend finding some of the Facebook groups about food for thru hikers and backpackers - I belong to one called Healthy Gourmet Backpacking Food that has many folks sharing ideas for gluten free, vegan, paleo etc backpacking recipes. I hope you get some opportunities for backpacking trips to test out some meals so you can come out with us on a longer trip again in the future. It was a great trip - I am still working on getting the swelling on my ankle down after the bee sting, it looks like I am going to be taking extra precautions in the future coz this second sting looks like it had a bigger reaction....
Aug 27, 2019, 5:59 PM
@Rebecca: Well I'm glad that you made it home safe!!! It was concerning that you drove after such a long, strenuous, trip! It was a blast! I took some notes for my next trip!!! New sleeping pad and tent for sure!!!
Aug 29, 2019, 2:56 AM
Oh oh oh!!! & on a positive note, I lost 3lbs too!!! Woot woot!!! ??
Just need like 3-4 more week long trips & I'll be set!!! ???
Aug 29, 2019, 5:19 AM
@Melissa D: I lost four pounds.... a little surprised after that burger n fries...
Aug 29, 2019, 1:31 PM
Well women, in the spirit of honesty I am going to tell you that after 3 1/2 days of feeling sluggish, low energy and headachy on descending the hill by car, and unable to clean out or re-pack my car, I took myself to the ER. I am basically fine though I was given a prescription for dexamethasone. I'd also purchased chlor-oxygen which I could feel taking affect right away and liked. The motrin was probably what also helped. So perhaps unnecessary, but with little information besides articles on line urging people not to dismiss symptoms, I decided to go to rule out big issues. Just for experience and info for our mental file-much good learning. I am almost back to 100% now or perhaps it was all the driving last night! I'm ready to go backpacking again but will be smarter and more strategic. Hugs to all. Appreciating the photos.
Aug 31, 2019, 12:40 AM
@Rebecca: v. glad you got that checked out! it sounds like elevation might have exacerbated something that needed to be treated! and i hope you might be able to join us at point reyes.
Aug 31, 2019, 1:04 AM
So.... Doing the math, 40% of our group needed medical attention after our trip. Does that mean our trip was as good as we thought???! LOL ?? ?

Joking aside, great that you both took care of yourself!
