Wirral Amblers

We are a cheerful, friendly ambling group for older people who want to become a little more active. We have an ambling range of up to 3 miles (usually about 1-2), go slowly and take rest and refreshment stops when possible. Everyone is made very welcome.

You first need to join the DowntoMeet website and then join Wirral Amblers on here.

Wirral Way (Stage 17) 1.78m

And so we come to the last stage of the 13 mile Wirral Way which we have been walking from around 2016 /17 in manageable sections.
This stage will be flat apart from an incline up to the main road at the end. We will not be crossing the road and will instead head for refreshments at the Sweet Pea Cafe which is open seven days a week from 9am - 5pm. The distance for this stage will be 1.78 miles out and back with the rest stop in the middle.
There are benches near the end of the route, but if anyone does need to stop and rest along the way we will find somewhere to stop, stand or lean on something for a few minutes.

Today we will be ambling round Port Sunlight wearing all manner of Christmas Hats to raise money for Claire House.
We will meet by the Museum at 11am.

Tour of cemetery at 1pm. The paths are tarmacked to varying standards but most of the site is accessible to wheelchairs. There are some steps in various places.
A public cemetery opened in 1864 and extended in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The layout was designed by Edward Kemp and the buildings by local architects Lucy & Littler. Building listed Grade 2.

Brimstage Orchard, Apple, Pear & Plum Day

A guided walk round a traditional orchard, pick/taste heritage varieties of apple, pear and plum. Visitors can bring their own apples to crush in a reconstructed 18th century cider press, make juice or cider to take away.
You can chat and swap advice about planting, tree care, bees, orchard crafts, whittling, basket making and orchard frivolities, from dances round the trees to quaffing fresh apple juice.

Brimstage Hall is probably the second oldest building in Wirral. It has a long history of domestic orchards on site and the current orchard was planned to recapture a past layout with heritage apples, pears, plums, cob-nuts, damsons and hedgerow fruits. We teach orchard skills …

A chance to walk up to the Greenway Route which has proved a success with walkers, wheelchair users and cyclists since its completion in April 2013, attracting 6,000 users in its first month. You can what the footpath is like and how wide it is from the second photo which I took the last time we walked it.
There is a sheep shearing station, some interesting rock formations towards the furthest point of the amble and I have now discovered there is a natural spring along this route which has been tapped to enable walkers to fill their bottles. We will have to listen out for running water.

New Ferry Butterfly Park

Situated next to Bebington railway station, Wirral, New Ferry Butterfly Park is an oasis of green tranquility in a densely populated urban area. Originally abandoned railway sidings, its industrial past has been put to good use as a home for wildlife.
Up to 26 species of butterfly have been recorded here, with 18 species breeding on site - giving the park its rather apt name.
